Our eldest is down with a high fever and cough. The first 24 hours is always crucial for us, and we hope he'll be up and about soon enough.

I'm gonna take a nap now and wake up from time to time to check on him. I have a cantankerous boss waiting at work tomorrow, but life is too short to be dealing with trivial matters like work, having the perfect hair and oh, I don't know, perhaps what to wear for Raya.

Cepat sembuh anakku.

Don't think I'll ever get adat(s) but it's always nice to learn new things. I suppose.

Mothers

My head felt like exploding after reading the news about the child who died because his mom forgot that he was sleeping in the car and left the kid there for several hours. I'm not a perfect mother either, sometimes I let my kids do the impossible (because I believe in allowing the kids to explore the world, be free, run wild et al) but mothers who are negligent, mothers who literally dump their kids for other people to care for and abusive mothers are the types that make my blood boil.

I'm gonna go read happier news now. Super Junior is coming out with a new album in July hey!

He's right, it's an unproductive day for me at work because I took a half day off in the morning. Did you guys go to Jason Mraz' concert last night? Felt the love?

I just realised that I can't seem to cough up a proper pensée if I don't post without a photo. So here's a photo from Japan 2010. Which has no connection to what I'm writing right now whatsoever. Motif.

Kinda miss Japan's vibrant colors I guess.

Just sharing what I normally browse when I'm bored at work.

GF1

Boss: Remember when I told you to pursue photography to the fullest if it's your hobby?
Me: Yes?
Boss: Now I want you to stop. Stop buying cameras, Nate!

So I have many cameras! Big deal! It's not like they cost millions!
But the latest one I got as an anniversary gift - the Lumix GF1 - is my current favorite. I still have a soft spot for my Lumix LX5 but this one, not only a hadiah dari suami from the heart (huhu) but the pancake lens is spectacular.

Now if only I have the discipline to sort the photos...

suami

Awesome husband. Equally awesome father. My husband always ask me if my arwah father is still around, would he like him? Yes, without a doubt.

Hai dari Serai

We celebrated Father's Day at Serai, Empire yesterday. A good restaurant with good food, good waiters and good host are hard to come by these days. Didn't take lots of pic food because er, I was starving and ate everything. Paling jealous tengok Rumi's fried rice with chicken satay. We've only been here twice but the food is great.

Kebetulan we sat next to a table of a big family celebrating father's day and a birthday as well. Sang along. Then came a lady and her daughter to share the cake with us. It was actually a primary school friend from Kota Bharu. She recognised me! Unbelievable.

Also bumped into my close uni friend J, who quit her job to care for her three kids and pursue her Masters. So envious of people who are going back to school. Arwah Baba always said to continue my studies, at least Masters, but yes, I fucked up. When the time is right, I'll go back to school. Yes, jom.

masak-masak

Apparently I have become obsessed with perfecting my chicken chop. Fine, I've only tried cooking it twice (first time with hubby's help). However, fresh chicken dipped in bread crumbs definitely taste better than ready-to-fry ones. but now that Food Foundry's chicken chop taste better than mine, I am thinking of ways to perfect the chicken without bread crumbs. Hmm. And russet potatoes fried with chilli olive oil? DA BOMB.

So last night we signed and sealed the design to our new kitchen! Exciting stuff. Can't wait to start cooking again - the recipe books are getting dusty I tell ya. So now no excuses lah not to cook eh?

Ok bye.

Mama

This year alone Mama has suffered a mild stroke, was admitted over the weekend for low potassium and now as we speak she's being rushed to the hospital after having suffered an epilepsy (which could be a stroke-related epilepsy).

We will get through this.

new leaf

June will be a busy month for me. No wait, it's already June! I normally rant about work being a bitch in December or November but this year it looks like June will be the reigning terror for me. Oh well. You gotta do what you have to do.

This morning I gave my sister a parenting advice. Wow me, all grown-up. But I think it was an advice to life in general. I've always been a firm believer for two things:
1. What you give you get back - I believe in the power of sadaqa (give it a try)
2. Think positive and only positive vibes will come to you

But thinking positive is a daunting task that only the right mindset can achieve. I may be positive half of the time, but most of the time I forget to think positive.. which makes me a loser quarter of the time. Heh.

Now that I have a new layout (thanks @liy) there's no excuse for me not updating this space anymore. WAE DON'T I SAY THIS ALL TEH TIME. Having a love-hate relationship with twitter right now. Remember how blogging used to be exclusive? Remember how writing is all about expressing/sharing your thoughts without a care in the world about who's reading it? Blogging imho is not just about telling the world about how awesome you are, it's about embracing your flaws and having the guts to deal with it. Yeah let's go back to that.

Let's go back to loving and healing (with self-censorship along the way).

MWA-HA-HA.

the weekend cure

(while I wait for the new colleagues to come in...)

Perhaps we finally found the formula for a good weekend.
  • Saturday: Belasah habis: Shopping; visit Mama; run errands etc.
  • Sunday: Duduk rumah diam-diam: Clean house, go crazy with the kids; catch up on k-drama.
(yes notice that 'cooking' is not in the itinerary hehe)

Yesterday's dessert from My Elephant, Section 17
So yesterday I had Thai food, and today my colleagues and I headed to Nirwana and had froyo for dessert.

Dieting is never an option for me. But trying to cut down on food is also a Goliath battle of its own.
So, right now, for a start, I've started playing badminton on Thursdays. I haven't figured out what to do with the rest of the week but I guess badminton is a start.

I have never been concerned about my weight, but it's hard to shut everybody up ("ehhh, dah bersemangat awak sekarang!") and going to stores and they don't have your size can be a little too much to bear at times.

In the meantime, I look forward to see the end-result for @amirhimself who has taken on the NST weight loss challenge. It's hard work, this losing weight business.

Now what should I have for dinner tonight?

the talented Audrey Kawasaki
Layan feeling blues, coz 2 of my colleagues' last day is tomorrow.

People say friendship lasts forever, so here's to another chapter to our lives. I don't see them as leaving, I see this as a road that suddenly diverges... yada yada you know the flow, pick up robert frost you know how this works. I've lost too many colleagues for the past 4 years in this industry and I'm blessed to have them as good friends outside the office.
okay I go layan k-pop now. heard that showdown tonight will cover k-pop. hwaiting! ~

Dinosaurs Alive! Or maybe not.

Took the kids to see Dinosaurs Alive! (yeah it comes with an exclamation mark) at Pusat Sains Negara last Monday.
You know when I was a kid (yes we are skipping a light fandago on memory lane here) there were 2 things that I remember loving. Dinosaurs. And Pusat Sains. Oh add Smurfs too and Jem & the Hologram. I wanted to be an archeologist, I knew all the names to all dinosaurs (my favorite was the Triceratops -- how can you not love the Triceratops? Those massive ceratopsian horns look equally cute on its babies). During my brief elementary years in Kota Bharu, Pusat Sains came to Kelantan for 2 weeks and I WAS THERE EVERYDAY. But of course I never grew up to be an archaeologist, and Jurassic Park ruined everything.
Dinosaurs Alive! was a major disappointment. Yes I do know that there will be big synthetic dinos screaming their lungs out whenever you walk pass them. But I didn't expect that it would be a 5 minutes stroll along a badly lit route which reminds me of a cheap haunted house you normally find at funfairs. -_-
And now I get why Malaysian kids will never dig science. Pusat Sains Negara is falling to pieces. The science stuff hardly work and it's disheartening to see such a giant place be filled with decrepit items (probably the same items I touched back when I was a kid). Geez. Please Malaysia, make science sexy again.
But if you still wanna check out them dinosaurs, do go. Don't say I didn't warn you. 15 bucks for adult, 6 bucks for kid. But I didn't pay for my kid coz I got a coupon off a newspaper the week before. Who needs to watch Extreme Couponing. I've lived in America, we survived on coupons baby!
That is all. I'm feeling like a dinosaur myself today. ArggggghhhHhhHhhHhh.

No parents should ever bury their children but I guess for all of us it would be twice as painful to bury our parents too.

Al-Fatihah to Chah's beautiful mother.

You know how kids tend to give you minor heart attacks on a daily basis?

Last Saturday baby Emre chipped his front tooth coz Rumi jumped on him. I was pretty relaxed about it because I didn't see any blood but my heartbeat was beating like a jungle drum and my head welcomed a headache that wasn't there in the first place. One thing about the si kecik is that he's a tough one, he cried a bit, we took him to the dentist (y'all should really visit Dr. Fauziah & team in Melawati) and everything is back to normal – sans half-a-tooth.

On Sunday I tried to make my kids call me 'boss'. When they are big enough I'll demand a party on Mother's Day for me and my friends. Tee hee. Hope you had the opportunity to tell you mothers how much you love her. Come on, admit it, you don't get to say it often, no?

Chicken Chop

The family wanted to do an early birthday celebration for kid Rumi (he's turning 3 on the 8th!) so we decided to make chicken chop with brown sauce. My girl Sara C suggested the Mccormick ready-made chicken gravy and 2 hours before making the gravy I found this video on youtube.

The gravy turned out very good! (I've never made chicken chop before, mind you). We bought the frozen chicken chop (already bread-crumbed) from a shop in Greenwood [Iwani Halal Frozen Food] and it took less than an hour to get everything ready. SIL made her delicious potato salad, and we added veggie balls and fruit cocktail (mixed fruit, susu Ideal with nata de coco) and a Thomas-themed cake. Ta-dah!

Wait, I'm not sure if 'bread-crumbed' is the right word, but you get my point.

Not looking forward to work tomorrow. The department is in shambles, morales are low (not mine) but it's tough to be positive about work when everybody around you is just so negative. Guess I just have look ahead and keep my head high. I worked so damn hard to get to where I am now. I don't feel the need to apologize for getting the better attention, the better pay or the better bonus, no? Work as a team, but by the end of the day, you still need to push yourself to the limits especially when you have a demanding boss.*

Enough ranting about work. I cleared my credit card today. My shoulders feel less heavy now.

* If you can't stand the heat, leave the kitchen. And that's that.

My husband is awesome because he has in-built GPS Japan system. In KL he is a bit fail when it comes to directions but in Japan, he is awesome-des. He said he's done with Japan and if I want to visit this place again next year, I'm on my own. On my own, with these crazy train lines!?! Die.
So I kinda went overboard with spending at Universal Studios. So unlike me to be wasting so much of my hard-earned money on souvenirs. But to make me feel better, I shall think of it as 'I can do whatever I want with my money I worked so hard to earn them!'. Yeah. Then I realised I have not been to Tokyo, Disneyland and Ghibli Museum. I am officially doomed.

Thoroughly enjoyed Osaka albeit a short one. I was aware that there will be a lot of walking, but with 2 kids in tow, there is no way for us to travel light. On the night we arrived, we hit Dotobori, a Petaling Street place of some sort, but with more life to it.
Will write about Universal Studio Japan if I have time. I think I overshopped there. Huhu.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

See this? Sprinkle lemon on them then eat them. Yes, bite the bones. Taste like ikan masin. I would have enjoyed them if I didn't have a bad cough. No worries, ample time to savor it again!
Haven't had the Mos Burger yet. I am reminded of why I love Yokohama so much. It's so serene and full of old people! Well, in a way. Yesterday we went to Negishi Park Forest to check out the sakura and just chilled. The kids enjoyed themselves.
Check out the grandma rocking the DLSR!
Gangster cilik Negishi Park. She was upset that Rumi took her twig. It was not ever hers. It belongs to mother nature! Aku lempang kang budak comel ni kang.
Hai.
Ok that's it for now. Gonna catch up on my Korean drama. Yes yes I know I'm in Japan right now. ;p

Sunday, April 08, 2012

Landed in chilly Narita late evening. Then took a 2-hour drive by bus to Yokohama. The kids are having high fever (the day before departure baru nak demam!) so you can imagine my restlessness throughout the flight. Gets more difficult when both boys want their Ayah for comfort.

Hope this kind of weather will help the boys recover faster. We got a lot of jalan2 to do!
YOKOHAMA, APRIL 2010.
First agenda when I get there! Left for Narita today. Praying for good health and fine sakura blossom weather. See you on the other side.

Few more days to go till we fly off to my favorite land. Bags still unpacked.

Tuesday, April 03, 2012

One of my favorite place for carbonara if you ask me is Citrus, BV2 (near Borders Express and Canoodling). If you're tired of the ostentatious noisy ambience over at Delicious, Plan B or whatever franchise the Big B can come up with these days, head over to Citrus. Give it a try. On another note, our visa application has been approved yesterday and I am over the moon. Finally, a well-deserved break. I've been working non-stop since I came back to work after giving birth to Emre last year! Now all I need to do is figure out how to pack for four...

You know what I love about having kids?

Reasons #96232753: I get to order kids meal and eat it! Mwahaha.

(what? save budget what)

Sunday, April 01, 2012

So at Del1cious today, my kid Rumi had a breakdown, he was cranky, he wants cake, he wants to roll around on the floor, he wants to go pharmacy, he wants the world as his oyster.. in other words, he was undecided. Moments like these, I don't throw a hissy fit. I prefer to take the I'm-just-gonna-watch-you-throw-your-tantrums approach (which most of the time doesn't work, really) but I don't want to shout at my kid or pick-him up and risk getting hit by him you know?

What I'm trying to get at is, there was this young mother with 2 kids giving me a dirty look. I know what she was thinking -- why am I not doing anything? I chose to ignore her because mothers tend to be judgmental of other mothers, we do it all the time. But yeah, whatever.

So I took Rumi to the pharmacy, came back, and had a fairly uninterrupted lunch. Until I heard the same mother yelling at her 4-yo kid (who decided to run away with her phone) for the entire restaurant to hear: WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH MY PHONE?!! WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH MY PHONE?!! Adoyai. Now that's a psycho mom. I may be a lousy mom but that woman really needs to chill man.

No wonder muka ketat je minah ittew. *roll eyes*

I'm 35 today. syukur & shukran.

Sent via BlackBerry from space.

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

This is your sky today.

You would have been 68 today. On top of my head, this is what I imagined:
1. I'd cook for you. Yes I can cook. I can no longer remember what is your favorite meal, but I do remember you hate tomyam with a vengeance. You'd love a good sambal belacan, which only Mama can pull off a mean one for us.
2. I'd buy you all the plants in the world. Nobody inherited your green thumb. The longest plant I had with me was a lucky bamboo, which eventually died after 6 years when I moved out from our K loft. I'd build you a garden, I'd watch you spend your evening planting trees and grooming flowers with love because they were the only thing that made you happy.
3. I'd buy you chickens and ducks for your garden. Remember back then when we had 6 geese? I'd buy them for you too. They may be loud but you love them for their fierce loyalty. They'd bite, they'd chase us around but we'd keep them anyway.
4. I'll let you babysit my boys. I'm having a hard time what you'd do with them, but I suppose you'd take the out for a drive, perhaps to the park nearby where you'd teach them how to kick a ball. You probably want them footballers, you'd be their referee, their coach, their best (or worst) critic.
5. I know a good place in Keramat where you and I can indulge in ox tongue masak merah. It's so delicious I bet you'd be coming back for more.
6. After dinner we'd hang out at Dataran Merdeka, your favorite place to people watch. You once said we all can learn about other people just by observing them.

That's all I can think about for now. I'm sorry I wrote this in a rush. I'm sorry I've started forgetting things about you but I still miss you. I'm doing great, I wish I could repay you back although I know you'll have none of it. I hope I've made you proud.

Killing time while I wait for 530pm. Heading out to see the rockstar paed. My boys, are down with another round of diarrhea. As much as we try to eat in, we are not immune to the threats that come from within. I am worried, because I thought the rotavirus or whatever vaccinations the kids took should at least be able to protect them. One of the reason why my eldest doesn't go to pre-school is because I am terrified of the danger that creeps within the confinement of those public school walls but alas, we can't protect them forever.

Risau, seribu risau.

Children grow out of the sickness in due time, but right now is the toughest time.

Quick post while I wait for er, Melodi. Emre is asleep, while Kid Rumi is out with his "Ayah-boi" and Atuk for a haircut. You know I get nervous everytime the boy goes for a haircut. All I can say to my husband is "don't break my heart" a la Jo Kukhatas in the No Smoking community service ad. Heh.

Friday lunch was to celebrate our girl at the office 28th birthday. Eversince I fell in love with Cafe Barbera's coffee at KLIA, I figured it's time to check out their resto in Bangsar (few doors down from Rebung). Food didn't disappoint and it's not crowded like Plan B or Ben's, which I shouldn't really comparing them with CB. For me, a good meal is often determined by how awesome is the appetizer. and yay I love their mushroom soup. I had carbonara (it was alright) and for dessert we had all kinds of dessert from tiramisu, bread pudding, brownies with ice-cream (Delicious wins) and peach cake. Or something.

Last night's impromptu dinner with Nida's family was in Bangi. Wadihana Islamic Kitchen. Eh did I get this name right. The carbonara is divine! and the chicken wings too! Will definitely go back there. Didn't realize Bangi has so many eateries to check out. *slaps head*

ok Melodi almost starting. Eat well, peace out.

Lost an entire long post about my new shoes! Pfttthhh.

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

Just so you know my 2011 resolution was to learn how to bake brownies. Didn't happen.

2012? I don't know. I turn 35 in March and surprisingly I don't even have a wish list for this! By the way, I no longer want that Balenciaga bag. I was going ga-ga over charm bracelets for a while but that fizzled before I could even decide on a charm.

Monday, January 02, 2012

Well, that was that. Grateful that we didn't have to greet 2012 from the hospital bed. I'm praying that this year will be a healthier year for us -- besides, praying for a big fat bonus in this season of economic calamity is like wishing for the country to snow. Rezeki comes in many forms and while I'm not the type to preach, I am thankful for everything.

I'm updating this from a government hospital. Mom is here for observation after a bout of diarrhea. Can't help but feel sad for my Mama. While my son enjoyed a hotel-like stay at a nice hospital (thanks to the Company's hospital benefits), my mother is here at the hospital that needs a bit of cleaning. A lot of cleaning actually. Sigh. Hope Mama will be discharged soon. The hospital is never a happy place no matter how much you paid for it.

I've probably mentioned this before but if you're in need of a good pediatrician at Sunway Medical Centre, ask for Dr. Chye.

Ok bye. Or to quote my 15-year old niece: vye vye.

Thursday, December 22, 2011

I'm expecting a (not-so-new) Mac next week so hopefully I can go back to regular programming in updating this space. Except, I think I said the same thing when we bought the iPad. The iPad? It's not mine anymore. It has Kid Rumi's fingerprints all over it. These days I only get to use it perhaps, I don't know, once a week on average. Think I also said the same thing about the iPod Touch no?

What a wonderful year it has been. Forget the tears and frustrations, I only want to dwell on the good and the awesome. Maybe I'll do a recap of 2011 next week, with photos. Let the photos do all the talking.

mind your language

Received a phone call from an ex-colleague offering a job and perhaps, better salary and benefits.
What impressed me most was that his English is better now, I remember I used to correct his grammar at work, in emails, correcting his English whenever I get the chance (mind you he was a manager back then and I was a lowly executive, we were not even in the same department!).

I praised his flawless English and he simply replied, "sebab awak-lah". Happy to know that I am indeed, doing something good to people without realising it.

Perhaps I should start charging for ad-hoc English lessons?

I was watching this and suddenly remembered something -- didn't I used to meditate to this song? Winters ago, while nursing a broken heart, I took up yoga and did a lot of meditating. I remember the first few classes it was difficult for me to meditate -- for some unknown reason I was too afraid to clear my mind, I was too terrified of falling because the yoga teacher made us think of mountains, and rivers of clouds. I thought it was dumb, I don't want to die jumping off a cliff, and I didn't want to drown either.

Silly.

this sacrifice.

Hari Raya Qurban always reminds me of that particular year back while I was living alone in K metropolis. My beloved Danial was probably 13 or younger that time, and I made him go to the surau downstairs. "Perhaps they'll give you free meat", I said knowingly. How wrong I was. Danial waited and waited for the people there to give him some meat and they never did but he was too afraid to come home, worried that I might scold him for coming home empty-handed. When he got home he had tears in his eyes and kept saying sorry profusely to me.

I felt so bad for making Danial wait that long. I was watching him from the 7th floor, and he was there all the time. This boy would never disobey me, he has always been that good kid who'd do anything to make his loved ones happy.

I still miss him. I look at my kids and often wonder how Danial would love them unconditionally and how he'd be their 'abang' who they can look up to.

I miss my father too, I miss having a father figure who would tell me what's right and what's wrong, who probably will say Amy, you're moving too fast, you need to keep your feet on the ground. I miss having that superhero who is not afraid to fail and not reticent to show his weaknesses. The one who loves his Broery Marantika endlessly, the one who cooks up a storm in the kitchen eventhough there's nothing much too eat, the one who is stubborn but willing to listen, the list is an abyss...

How do people with this kind of emotional void in their heart move on with their lives? I am dying to know.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Money motivates. These days, when this urge to spend money on food or any shiny stuff I see online, I just stare at this bag and be reminded that I need to save money. Save money Nate. Save money. Saaaaave moneeeeeeeeeeey.

The thing is, I'm not sure if I even like this bag. This love-hate relationship I have with a Balenciaga is driving me nuts. I have too many bags already! But you don't have a really expensive bag, said the Devil. Look at the rose gold hardware studs. Aish, shut up! The leather is very light. Huwaaaaaaaa....

Ok bye. Happy Deepavali guys.

I wish I was in a food business

Fasting month over and what else to do but go back to our regular foodie programming!

Tough week again so last Friday we drove to Bangsar Village 1 to check out Ben's. I've always wanted to go there, been hearing people raving about it, the pizza's good! and knowing that it's under the same management as Delicious and Plan B, I doubt we could go wrong with the food there.

Except, I didn't know that
BEN'S;
BEN'S GENERAL FOOD STORE;
are 2 different restaurants guys.. -_-

Was disappointed that Ben's GFS don't serve pasta (WHAT NO PASTA) because we googled the menu before heading to Bangsar (yeah, wrong menu, derp) and opted for Salami pizza which turned out very nice. Didn't get to take a picture of the pizza because I was starving. Heh. Had bread & butter pudding for dessert and latte and I am happy person. I'd definitely come again if I'm feeling health conscious BUT I STILL WANT MY PASTA. With lots of cream on it.

Ambiance is a bit noisy, you know how much I hate sitting too close with other patrons because I will end up eavesdropping on them. British grandmas on my left can't wait for Christmas, and mak datins behind us insist that the the cute waiter cut the pizza for them. Pfffttthhh.
