Unique Seafood PJ

I think with the new job I am able to blog more now, or at least do more scheduled posts than before. Not because I don't have much work to do here but I'd like to make more time to write and journal. They are still by far the best way to de-stress (oh, that, and squishing my babies) Besides, I have so many food posts that I want to write about! Or rather, slap some photos and post. Haha.

On 20th June, I had iftar session with the (now ex) colleagues from the (ex)Company's Islamic arm. When Rai announced that we're having fatty crabs I just couldn't say no! TBH I've never heard of Unique Seafood but when googled I read so many good reviews about it so yay!

I let my colleagues do the food ordering - I don't really mind - as long as I get to order fried calamari with salted egg yolk!

Just look at the gorgeous venison. I was told that they can make your body heaty, but I walloped almost half of it anyway. The meat is so tender, how can you say no to that!

The salted egg yolk fried calamari was pretty good. I'd say it's in my top 2 list, alongside husband's EWA favorite.

Don't forget to eat your veggies!

Me and my nasi goreng can never ever ever be apart! Didn't quite like it though. Crab meat and udang kering overload. Meh.

The (5) star of our buka puasa. I was expecting it to be super duper spicy, but this is one is more on the sweet side.

The only  thing I didn't touch. Never been a fan of lemon chicken.

For the life of me I can't recall the name of the bread! So crispy and cicah with the fatty crab - HEAVEN. I ordered this twice haha.

I hope to see you again my crustacean friends. xoxo

nasi minyska

So two weekends back I had this incredible urge to eat nasi minyak and made nasi minyak I did! Okay lah so I was kinda stressed out because Giant ran out of 'pewarna kuning telur' but tawakal sajorks. Made ayam masak merah (both recipes courtesy of aziejaya) and topped it with my SIL's delicious acar buah - you can reach her at @kulinari_umijune if you wanna order!

Alhamdulillah it turned out good! Well the rice was slightly bland (needed more ghee it seems) but ayam masak merah was delicious. Invited my brother over - who eats ayam masak merah almost on a daily basis - and dia tambah 3x!

So last weekend I decided to make them again for husband's pot luck. While the nasi minyak menjadi (finally found pewarna and threw in raisins as well) but the ayam masak merah was blergh. Probably I shouldn't mix cili giling with the rest of the blended items. I danna. Felt such like a failure. Eceh.

Maybe I should attempt to do nasi beriani from scratch next. Still have a lot of beras basmathi at home anyway. :)

uokatsu opposite plaza damas

Wow this is a really old post that's been in my draft inbox since forever. This place is owned by a Japanese couple and I remember liking this place for its authenticity. Their operating hours a bit off tho 'coz they are open on certain hours only.

Address:

Bakar

We celebrated our 8th anniversary last month. Since it's puasa month, it's definitely buka puasa option for us. Not wanting to go for those overpriced Ramadhan buffets, Husband suggested Bakar, over at Lorong Kurau near NST.

Place pretty small, so imagine my surprise when we had to sit facing the kitchen. So much for an intimate anniversary celebration. -_-
But that's okay, 'coz at least I get to see the cooks at work and give them the death glare if the food comes late.

Alhamdulillah the food came on time. Below has got to be my favorite appetizer. That's ox tongue y'all! Served with egg Benedict and the gravy is just to die for. Or to order a second round.

Husband's roasted duck. I'm not a big fan of ducks, but I'll make this one an exception.

I ordered spring chicken. If you eat the chicken alone, it will be quite salty. Hence why you need to combine everything - the white sauce thing, chilli, that pinkish radish (kinda sweet), pita bread. The result, heaven in your mouth.

Below is the much talked about charcoal pavlova. It's a bit too tangy for me, but great nonetheless.

We will definitely come again!

Last day of leisure

I have a pile of forms to be filled up for my first day of work tomorrow but I'm just lounging right now refusing to do anything (yet).

I have a faint headache thanks to the musang king cheesecake made annually by my banker-baker extraordinaire friend, Nic. It's really good guys. It's like eating durian really, with a bit of cheese hehe. So satisfying though.

I also went for a last minute baju office shopping today for you know, more Shariah-compliant ones. Bought 8 pieces and I think I may have bought 2 of the same ones...

Wish me luck for tomorrow. No turning back now!

Early reminder

Not sure why my posts via email not showing pulak. Haih seksa betul nak jadi blogger berdisiplin ni! Maybe I need a new laptop - no wait, a workspace, or maybe a Mac... oh nvm.

Anyways, the husband told Rumi today:
"Kita tak boleh ada tattoo tau"
Kelakar.
A bit too early for a warning but cute anyway.

Ice Age 3

Was craving Wendy's so we might as well throw in a free movie as well. I still have a few free movie tickets from previous job so okay lah, let's make the boys happy before the start of the school again this week.

The movie was okay, I somehow managed to stay awake (almost) throughout the movie. Beats watching Finding Dory!

Monday dah today. Sent Rumi to school then gonna send Emre later. A week off before I start my new job! Mak nak buat apa ni? :D

Farewell

This is my office farewell email.

+++

Dear colleagues (or better, family & friends),

"A nice goodbye makes it too hard to leave."

Not sure why is it so hard for me to pen my last 'write-up', probably because I hate goodbyes. It was a difficult decision to make, having been here for close to 9 years! A lot of memories & laughter made, tears shed (hehe), friendships forged but after some serious thinking I have made up my mind to start a new chapter in my life.

I have grown so much here and from the bottom of my heart, thank you & terima kasih for teaching and inspiring me, and allowing me to do the same to you. Our paths will cross again, sooner or later, I'm sure of it (I never say no to lunch/dinner/wedding invites). ☺
Don't be a stranger!

Take care and don't ever lose sight of your dreams.
Selamat Hari Raya and Maaf Zahir & Batin.

xoxo,

Nate.

Mama's cooking

Reminiscing about Mama's cookings with my sibs today.

resep daging bistik

One of my favorite dish that Mama's used to make was bistik daging.
Found the recipe on mat gebu's blog and will try to make it sooner or later. Not sure if it's gonna taste the same though.

I park the recipe here first okay.

BAHAN-BAHANNYA :-)
500 g daging batang pinang
400 g ubi kentang, dikiub 2 cm (kurang lebih 4 biji, boleh kurangkan kalau suka)
4 camca besar tepung gandum
4 camca besar margerine
3 camca besar minyak masak
1 camca teh lada hitam biji, ditumbuk halus
4 cm kulit kayu manis
Garam dan gula secukup rasa
Kacang pis, untuk hiasan

BAHAN KUAH :-)
200 ml air (mat lebih kan sikit)
120 ml sos tomato
2 camca besar cili kisar
1 camca besar tomato puree
1 kiub stok daging (optional)

BAHAN DIKISAR :-)
1 biji bawang besar
6 biji bawang merah
3 ulas bawang putih

CARA MEMBUATNYA :-)

Well this stupid app called bloguma pretty much screws up my posts so best option now is to update via email. Meh.

weekend is here

Slow week. The closer you get to your last day of work (just before Raya) the slower the world evolves. But I still have 1001 of things to do though. At work, at home.
Weekend plans (because having a list is always awesome)

  1. Budget for Raya - and post-Raya too
  2. Raya card list (it's been a while - so if anyone want a card Raya from me don't be shy just send me your address okay). Last day to send out Raya cards is 29 June btw and pos malaysia has a special promo - 50 sen for sending card raya out this year).
  3. Kemas rumah - Kind of fallen behind when it comes to cleaning house :/
  4. Finding Dory (done, such a disappointment!)
  5. Masak
Last night I cried after my eldest yelled at me. I keep forgetting that he is this angsty 17 year old trapped in a 7 year old body (god, this means there are more years to come hehe). Sigh. ;p

when

One of my favorite questions to ask people who decide to cover up is "when did you decide that it's the right time?".

Granted, you don't need an excuse to 'berhijab' like artis Malaya sorang tu yang kononnya started wearing one because her hair was thinning hehe. But it's always nice to know.

My CEO for example, started wearing one a fews days into Ramadhan last year. I think it was a few weeks after her birthday and she said "if you still don't change when you hit 40 then something must be wrong somewhere". The weekend before the change she went on a shopping spree hehe.

Another colleague on the other hand had always wanted to wear one since her father died a couple of years back. One day she just decided that this is the right time.

Me... I don't know. I can feel it coming though haha. Today after a meeting in town I went out to Jalan TAR with a collueage and borong many colors! The other day I felt like strangling someone at work. I don't know how the topic of me berhijab came out (probably because I just got back from tadarus class) and she blurted out something like "Nate you jangan buat I terkejut and suddenly pakai tudung. Tak fashionable and outdated lah". EXCUSE ME?!! Granted she is a non-Muslim but I have never encountered any non-Muslims who would think this way! What an ignorant douchebag. Dampened my spirit a bit.

Anyways, thank you for your kind wishes and support. Watch this space!

Rasa.

Rasa nak marah je today. Takpe2 probably the hormones acting up again. *checks calendar* Nope, not PMS-ing. Too many trigger points at work today. I'll feel better after my class in the afternoon later.

Sunday morning

It's so nice to be able to sit at Kinokuniya and take my own sweet time browsing for books without having to worry the boys going MIA on me in the bookstore! We watched The Nice Guys today. Ryan Gosling's pretty funny. I still don't get the attraction with this guy but it was an enjoyable movie nonetheless.

I've been wearing hijab on-and-off these days. #natehijabstruggles is real, I can only pray that things will pan out sooner or later. #prayforNate

we are all heroes

Today di Publika (pi survey koleksi raya fashionvalet cough) I ran after a trolley that was about to hit a car. Fuh terasa seperti seorang superhero kejap. It felt good.

Just to put it here after 8 years (8 friggin' years!) I finally quit my job and tendered my resignation last Friday. Couldn't really sleep for the past few days. Fikir macam2. But today after seeing my CEO and getting her blessing to leave (fyi, I tendered once last year but was persuaded to stay) I am feeling much better. Terngiang-ngiang lagu Pearl Jam "Alive" the minute I stepped out of her room.

I start my new job after Raya. Gonna leave my comfort zone for new adventures. Scared shit but if I don't try this I will never know.

Everything is going to be okay. I am going to be okay.

Sixty9 Islamic Steakhouse

Ah, what a letdown. I was looking for a good place to meet with my siblings for our dinner in Melawati/Gombak area so main google-je. This restaurant came up and since no one has ever been here before so okaylah.

Some pointers:
  • Some areas of the restaurant are poorly lit.
  • The cheese oysters were not fresh.. When it came to us the cheese was already hard!
  • My husband ordered the tenderloin steak. The 'steak' came out like a ball and it wasn't tender at all.
  • I ordered the mixed platter. Let's just call it a mixed review platter hehe.
  • My niece ordered chicken chop okay. The waiter who held the a mixed platter (we ordered 2) said it was chicken chop so my niece took it la. She was sitting at the far end so I couldn't check la if it's the right one. Lagipun gelap kan. So when we asked where is the other mixed platter thinking that it has not arrived. It came later, but in the end we had THREE mixed platter. Adoi. Malas nak argue about things we've already eaten.
  • The coveted dessert (nutella cheesecake pie) was biasa-biasa je.
  • My other niece's seafood spaghetti somehow was very citrus-y. Tak best katanya.
Sekian terima kasih.

change.

I hate changing phones. Partially because I hate it when people go "ooooh, new phone!" and I need to have some important photos in my phone – photos of Danial, my family, my idols (tsk), some doa, illustrations for my wallpaper and the most important thing, my Mama.

let me be me and you be you

We are always kelam-kabut on weekday mornings because a) I always wake up late b) Idris wake up late c) I only like to iron clothes in the morning d) I sleep early the night before and too tired to do anything else. Nevertheless, that time frame between 630am to 700am is the time I cherish the most. This is the time where my eldest will hold my hand a little bit tighter as we walk to the car and on our way to his school we'd listen to his favourite songs. Or mine. Note: the other day he was shocked to hear a Queen Latifah song – only because his class teacher's name is Latifah. :)

During this drive I'd also take the chance to learn more about my son – what are you eating in school, who are your friends (why am I always worried if he has friends or not), is anybody bullying / taking your money, which teacher is most evil etc. It is a terrifying feeling the minute I leave my son in school – but these days I just tell myself, let go let go. I can only do some much for my boy.

I'm turning 39 tomorrow. I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

Or cry harder.

Dessert for lunch.

Had dessert for lunch last week. This is the Belgian waffle with almonds from Nutmeg. Didn't have much appetite that time and Nutmeg's menu is pretty much on the high side anyway. The waffle is pretty good though.
Staring at my dusty leather shoes I am transported back to when my late father used to make polish ALL his shoes every other weekend. I hated the chore because the smell of the shoe polish nauseate me and I remember grumbling to myself – why why why – why do people even bother polishing shoes, who's gonna look at them anyway?

He is 5ive.

Alhamdulillah my youngest turned 5 today! This is the boy who constantly say "you say bad word" whenever we accidentally let out any swear words. Also the kid who would say "I love you" or "I miss you" and hug us at random moments or when you least expected it.

Alhamdulillah for everything.
Al-Fatihah to my arwah Baba who passed away on the same date. Imaan and Idris would have been his greatest pride and joy.

Food in JB

Alamak, had this in my drafts but forgot to post it. So we went to SG for the Bon Iver concert last month. We stayed in JB though. On the day we left JB, we had breakfast at Warong Pokok Cherry and I must say the nasi dagang is as authentic as the one at Kubang Pasu, Kota Bharu! Keropok pun sedaaaaap. Semua lah sedap dan murah. Glad we found this place (thanks google!).

Oh by the way, when we got back to JB after the concert, we didn't know where to eat. So brother Uber dropped us at a Thai restaurant but who wants to eat expensive Thai food when it's close to midnight! Spotted Restoran Banafee so I ordered Nasi Goreng Banafee and it was pretty darn good!

Made jokes about Betty Banafe but few days later Ame told me that er, that place is owned by her husband. Oops! ;p

Food in Ipoh

Had a good break in Ipoh, albeit a short one. Well, any trips with the family outside KL are always good! Glad that we managed to check out some good food in Ipoh.

I'll let the food pics do the talking.

The infamous nasi ganja. Added hati to my dish. With cham ice.
I call this roti kahwin - just kaya&mentega & roti bakar goodness.
Dinner at Vegas! Chicken chop hainan.
The next day we had breakfast at Hollywood, next to Vegas. (hur hur)
We had chee chong fun & char kue teow (KJ's makcik gemok ckt is still the best though)
One for the road. Nasi ayam Restoran Fuziah known for its crunchy bones and skin.

Kasut

Although I'm the last person you'll see at a premium outlet, we went to JPO anyway during our short trip to JB-SG last weekend.

Got these Rockport x Adidas techonology shoes for cheap!

OK dah.

SG short trip

We went to Singapore on 26th Feb to watch Bon Iver! Booked a place called The Grand Jade Hotel in JB then took train-MRT to get around in SG. Pretty dope short trip because I get to see my bestfriend as well who incidentally managed to get ticket seats right next to ours.

Hotel room pretty decent for a short stay. Uber's reliability in JB is debatable, but when you have Waze everything is possible!
